| Founded in 1888, Leeds City Art Gallery now houses an impressive collection of art dating back to around 1820. The Gallery's 20th century British collection was hailed by the Times as "probably the best outside London". Spread over three floors the Gallery boasts famous Victorian paintings, a small collection of French Post-Impressionist paintings, contemporary British art and a selection of works on paper drawn from the important collection of prints, watercolours and drawings.
Among these exhibits will be found the moonlit scenes by Leeds artist Atkinson Grimshaw, a group of works by members of the Camden Town Group and their leader Walter Sickert, contemporary paintings by Paula Rego and Bridget Riley, and sculptures by Canova, Rodin, Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth and Paolozzi. Throughout the year a series of events and exhibitions, temporary and artist-led workshops introduce visitors to the exciting use of materials and new processes employed by artists today. The Education Service based at the Gallery offers a free consultation service for those leading group visits. The Gallery also houses the Craft Shop and Design Gallery, one of the most prestigious retail outlets for contemporary craft in the North of England. Adjoining the Gallery is the Henry Moore Institute with the acclaimed sculpture study centre, and programme of sculpture exhibitions.
