Map of Leeds - Leeds Bridge Crossing the River Aire at Bridge End map
Leeds Bridge Crossing the River Aire at Bridge End
Leeds. West Yorkshire
The present bridge was built in 1873, replacing a medieval bridge. This bridge was the only crossing point between Kirkstall and Swillington until the 19th Century.
For years the city turned its back on the river - there is a story that not many years ago if you saw a fish in the River Aire as it passes through Leeds, you would be likely to see a plastic tray and a portion of chips float past with it!
The bridgehead building has a prominent clock. The bridge is the site of the first ever 'moving picures' filmed by Louis LePrince (1888) - I wonder if he popped them into Max Speilman's for a 20 minute turn-around!
You can take a walk along the towpath through this part of the city, but beware that some sections will have you 'backtracking' as there are private 'residents only' parts.
Oh - and don't fall in! - many sections have no guard rails.
