Thwaite Mills - Raymond Chalk Crushing Mill
This area of the roof gallery holds a number of interesting items of equipment, including the top of the Raymond Chalk Crushing Mill, the Dust Extraction Unit, more drying benches and the Jubilee Track and Decauville Truck terminating at the Lift Shaft and Pump Shaft.

The Raymond Mill was installed in the 1930's to increase the output of whiting from the mill. It is a dry grinding process and as you can see is a large and relatively complex piece of machinery. It stands on the ground floor and reaches up here into the rafters. The water wheels could not produce enough power to drive the Raymond Mill so a Marshall 120 horsepower semi-diesel engine was installed.
