Entrance to The VICTORIA QUARTER
Shows the recent 'pedestrianisation' of Briggate, this photograph would have been impossible to achieve on any Saturday as thousands of shoppers fill the road.

BRIGGATE: This shopping street was for many years one of the busiest roads in Leeds.
Now closed to traffic for most of the day.

Shoppers can stroll from side to side, and even have a chance to glance up at some of the architecture.

Shoppers pack Commercial Street, photographed here looking West towards City Square.

The character of Leeds has been enhanced by the extensive areas of the city centre shopping district which is now only open to pedestrians.

'Briggate' is one of the oldest streets in Leeds - a cloth market was held on each side of the road as far back as 1725! In 1822 there was a daily egg and poultry market at the North end.

Many of the leading names in retail have their stores in Briggate, Marks and Spencer are here (of course!) and now Harvey Nichols attracts the well heeled shopper.
