| CITY SQUARE: 100TH BIRTHDAY Plans are well underway to mark the centenary of City Square in Leeds, which will be taking place over four days during September 2003 (16 Tuesday 19 Friday September 2003). Leeds City Council is working with local A Level students from Royds High School (part of South Leeds Learning Partnership) to celebrate 100 years of the Square. An historical theme has been given to the birthday celebrations that involves looking back at the lifespan of the Square, in a forward thinking way. The students have been using the high tech facilities at the South Leeds Learning Centre to create a short film (4-minutes) which will be shown as part of the celebrations. The film called City Square a Centenary of Progress is narrated by Councillor Elizabeth Minkin and starts with an Ariel view of Leeds from over a century ago. The drawing which has been rarely seen, was taken from a hot air balloon and shows Leeds the city of a thousand trades. The footage then takes the viewer on a historical journey highlighting the many ups and downs of the Square, bringing the audience right up to its present day newly refurbished state and beyond. |

| The Queens Hotel, The Majestyk Night Club, The Leeds Central Post Office and The Observatory Bar can be seen from the square, which has as its centre piece a statue of 'The Black Prince'
The Square is now pedestrian access only, and the lack of traffic seems to sit uneasily around what was once the busiest hub of the Leeds road system.
