Visitor Submissions:
The Bear pit is an unusual addition to the usual sights of Headingley (students, students and more students!)however it gives an insight into the Headingley of days gone by. The Bear Pit was the Victorian equivalent of todays Skyrack - Entertaining, Social and often quite savage(!!). It was here that the socialites of Headingley would gather to be entertained by the, then popular, bear fights that were held here. Many of the students that inhabit Headingley today do not realise just how much history actually surrounds them. I only realised this when I was wandering to the pub with my boyfriend and decided to read the plaque underneath the arch. I was amazed and extremeley pleased that this piece of the past still stands in the centre of the forever developing Headingley.

The Bear Pit is an intriguing historical landmark set back from Cardigan Road and harks back to Victorian era of Leeds Zoo. Back in Christmas 1997 it also lied between my flat and the bars of Headingley. After a long night out I thought it a great idea for me and a girl I had met called Andrea to climb through a hole in the fence and up the grassy bank to peer down into the pit. This was cool until I decided to run towards the main facade facing the road. The ground disappeared below me and I just remember falling into a black abyss which turned out to be the turret you see on the right. With Andrea's help ("Bob, where are you?") I crawled back up the stone spiral staircase within the turret. The result? Snapped knee ligaments, severe bruising of the ribs, two months on crutches, weekly physio and Andrea, after carrying me back to my flat, was never heard of again.
