Entering the MAIN HALL, the visitor sees the space much as it was after its completion in 1903 with its heavy seventeenth-century-style plasterwork and stone chimneypiece (the latter brought here from nearby Huddleston Hall). The room is an impressive example of Edwardian historicism. Probably designed by Colonel Gascoigne and his agent Herbert Prater, the hall was intended as an informal living room, the window bay serving as an occasional venue for afternoon tea. The family chose to hang some of their best paintings here. Opposite the chimneypiece can be seen Pompeo Batoni's magnificent Portrait of Sir Thomas Gascoigne, the 8th Baronet. Painted whilst Sir Thomas was on his Grand Tour in 1779 the work also shows a snuff box - said to have been given him by the French Queen, Marie Antoinette - and the portrait busts of his friends and travelling companions, the Swinburnes, which are still in the house. Also here are portraits of Sir Thomas's parents and mementos of Colonel GASCOIGNE's collecting in the form of his large model of the Tudor ship Revenge.
