Abbey House Museum – Exterior
Perching on the hillside overlooking Kirkstall Abbey and its grounds, Abbey House is home to a wealth of historical artefacts many relating to Leeds life and, of course, the Abbey. It began life as a gatehouse for the Abbey in the 11th Century, indeed the distinctive arches of the original entrance can still be seen from the exterior where they form the oldest part of the existing building.

A museum for over 70 years Abbey House is brimming with memories and surprises. From the mid to late 1950’s a set of Victorian Streets were constructed and the Museum began to rescue items from old shops, warehouses and ‘street life’.

Following extensive improvements to displays and facilities over the last few years Abbey House shines as a bright example of Leeds heritage and its preservation. Its appeal to young and old alike is undoubted – a trip here should not be taken in a ‘spare moment’ as even a few hours may not be enough!
