Abbey House Museum – Harewood Square
Dominated by the pawnbroker’s shop and the Wesleyan Methodist Sunday School Harewood Square is brimming with glimpses into a life where your valuable belongings could ‘buy’ you your supper and the Church provided you with ‘food’ for the mind and spirit.

In Victorian Leeds the stigma of hocking your belongings was less of a social disgrace than it would be today. Indeed, the pawnbrokers provided a relatively safe place to keep jewellery, or even your Sunday suit, only worn for special occasions.

Take a peep into the classroom where the children of the poor learned their alphabet and recited their multiplication tables. For those children who attended Sunday School regularly, books were presented as a reward. As can be expected the lessons given in a school such as this would always have an underlying scriptural message.

The toy shop windows exhibit the kind of toys Victorian children would have dreamt about receiving for Christmas or a Birthday. The latest toy from Germany or the most up-to-date dolls imported from France.
