Kirkstall Abbey was founded by Cistercian Monks in 1152. Construction of the 224 ft by 62 ft building took 30 years. Completion of the surrounding properties, Abbots houses, The Infirmary, Guest House and Chapter House took another 50!

After the dissolution the church was pillaged, the roof and beams were stripped out, and then the tower collapsed into the nave in 1779. Many of the stones used in the original construction have found their way into buildings completed in more recent times.

The Abbey and grounds are open all the year round, and adjoins the River Aire.

A small car park is situated on the opposite side of Kirkstall Road, if driving, this is the closest spot - park there and then take the pedestrian crossing to the Abbey.

The Abbey Museum was re-opened to the public in 2001 following refurbishment. You can now take a full Virtual Tour of the Abbey House Museum - click here to enter.
