| Leeds Town Hall - interior of Courtroom (now disused) |
| Leeds Town Hall has housed the Magistrates Courts until their transfer to their new home on Westgate in the summer of 1993. The Courtroom seen here will be a familiar sight to many of the Legal Profession in Leeds, not to mention the many who have received justice within these walls. A staircase leads from the Dock directly down to the cells beneath (the 'Bridewell') The Bridewell was used to hold prisoners arrested within the town area, awaiting their appearance in court (and many were returned to cells, to await transfer to Armley Prison or beyond). The term Bridewell has now become the generic name for a Towns 'lock up'. The original Bridewell was a vagrants prison near a Church called St Brides and a well which was a tributary of the River Thames, hence Bridewell.
