Guide and Virtual Tour of Leeds: Gascoigne Almshouses - Aberford.
Panorama | Review | Map and 45º Aerial View
The small village of Aberford lies eight miles to the east of Leeds city centre. One of its most remarkable buildings is the Gascoigne almshouses, built in 1844 by the architect George Fowler Jones.
These Gothic-style buildings with gables, pinnacles and a magnificent central tower were intended to house eight elderly tenants of the nearby Gascoigne estate. Just to the west of the village is another unusual monument, a stone triumphal arch celebrating the American victory in theWar of Independence (1775-83).
original almshouses were sold by Leeds City Council and are now a thriving business centre. A substantial modern extension was built to the rear of the building in 2004 but the original front elevation is unchanged.
