Guide and Virtual Tour of Leeds: Kirkstall Abbey.
Panorama | Review | Map and 45º Aerial View
The ruined Kirkstall Abbey lies three miles north-west of Leeds city centre. It was founded in 1147 by monks and lay brothers from Fountains Abbey who moved there in 1152 when land was granted to the order by wealthy landowner Henry de Lacey.
In 1890 the site was bought and presented to Leeds Corporation who opened the ruins and grounds to the public in 1893. The Abbey has recently benefited from a major improvement project and the opening of a new visitor centre.
